Chapter Five

I sat in the comforts of Mama’s kitchen chair and watched blankly as swarms of people filled her living room and kitchen. I wasn’t sure why there were so many people here given that more than half of them barely knew Brace at all. They sure didn’t know that he was in a relationship either. Why would they know?

I felt as if I were in some alternate universe. Mama wouldn’t accept the fact that I didn’t want to attend Brace’s funeral. Mama was still Mama and though everything that had happened had certainly left her feeling down, she repeatedly told me that we owed it to his memory to do everything that we could do.

What made sense of it? Nothing. There was no reason that a bunch of strangers were gathering around to talk about Brace when they didn’t know him. What does it matter if he fixed their broken stove or fridge one day? They didn’t make any effort to get to know him. The only ones who really did were the younger girls in town who found him attractive. Not that I could blame them for that, because I definitely did too. I would have fallen in love with Brace no matter what he looked like, though. It was like he said; his physical appearance was just a vessel and the person that he was lived on the inside.

Brace’s wake seemed to last forever. I didn’t speak to anyone and I frequently excused myself to the bathroom just to get a few moments of quiet time. I wasn’t able to make sense of what I felt. There was an endless amount of unanswered questions that plagued me every day and the nights were the worst.

I had heard on a show that I’ve watched in the past that the worst day of loving someone is the day that you lose them and I now understood exactly what that meant.

Mama didn’t expect me to help clean up after all of our guests left, but I felt the compelling need to do so anyway. She had worked so hard to make sure that he was remembered in the proper ways. He didn’t have any family of his own, but Mama considered him a part of ours and she was right.

There were many nights that were spent wondering if I should tell Mama all about Brace. I didn’t believe that it would do any harm now.

“Mama,” I said. “I’m tired. I just want to go to sleep.”

Mama put down the towel she was using to dry the mass pile of dishes and set it on the counter. I watched as her shoulders slumped and she pressed her hands to her hips. I had learned to recognize that over the years. It was generally a sign that she was upset or frustrated and in this case, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were both.

“Child, you have to talk about this sometime. It’s not healthy to be keepin’ things locked in, you know.”

Mama’s voice was stern.
